Artista a tutto tondo, Roger Dean (Ashford, Inghilterra,
1944) è sicuramente il designer che più ha legato il suo nome al periodo aureo
del rock degli anni ’70, in particolar modo ai gruppi della corrente
“progressive”. La sintonia dell’arte di Dean con questo genere specifico è
totale: Dean predilige le grandi costruzioni paesaggistiche dominate della
natura e dai suoi elementi, in particolare acqua e aria; alla base del suo
tratto c’è sempre una curva come primitiva geometrica da cui derivano
innumerevoli declinazioni, capaci di piegarsi di volta in volta alle esigenze
dei corpi e delle forme animali, così come all’edificazione di maestosi
castelli rocciosi. Rara e quasi sempre sottodimensionata la figura dell’uomo,
delle sue opere e delle sue costruzioni. La tavolozza di Dean è quanto mai
varia: l’artista predilige i gradienti su tonalità fredde e “minerali”, in
particolar modo l’azzurro e il verde. Il tratto è sempre impeccabile e la
definizione delle forme immacolata. I soggetti preferiti da Dean derivano da un
fantastico mondo immaginario di origine ”Tolkieniana” e a volte fumettistica,
popolato da animali fantastici derivati ora dall’incrocio di specie esistenti,
ora da pure invenzioni dell’autore. Il lettering tipico dell’autore è morbido
ed etereo, derivato in ugual misura dall’art-nouveau e dagli artisti
psichedelici americani degli anni ’60.
Oltre che al disegno, Dean si è nel tempo occupato anche di
architettura, cinematografia sperimentale e grafica computerizzata.

All-round artist, Roger Dean (Ashford, England, 1944) is
certainly the designer that more has
linked his name to the golden age of ’70s rock , especially the groups of the
"progressive" movement. The synergy of Dean’s art with this genre is
total: Dean prefers large landscape dominated by the nature and its elements,
particularly water and air; at the base of his tract there is always a curve as
geometric primitive from which derive many variations, able to bend time to
time to the needs of bodies and animal forms, as well as the building of
majestic rocky castles. Rare and almost always underrated the figure of man,
his works and his buildings. Dean's palette is extremely varied: the artist
prefers gradients on cool and "mineral" shades, especially blue and
green. The line is always impeccable and immaculate is the definition of forms.
The Dean's favorite subjects come from a wonderful imaginary world of
"Tolkien" origin and sometimes populated by fantastic animals derived
from the crossing of species existing sometimes pure invention of the author.
The typical lettering is soft and ethereal, derived in equal measure by
art-nouveau and the American psychedelic artists of the '60s.
In addition to the design, Dean has also worked on
architecture over time, experimental film and computer graphics.
